A Driving Experience Like No Other. How To Choose The Perfect Mazda 3.
The new Mazda 3 has managed to improve on top of its popular third-gen predecessor, releasing an impressive, ultra-well-rounded small car. It is well-refined and ticks all the right boxes for performance dynamics, ride comfort, interior quality and style.
Mazda has gone all out with its styling, creating a car with an edgy design using its Kodo – Soul of Motion design philosophy that produces the effect of looking like it’s always moving, even when standing still.
The next-gen Mazda 3 offers improved economy, improved the driver experience, and delivers a more premium feel behind the wheel.
With the Mazda 3, you have a choice of six trim grades, split between two engine sizes. In addition, all trim grades are available hatchback and sedan body types.
This range gives you greater versatility in choosing something that suits your own needs. However it can appear a little confusing when confronted with so many choices.
Read on to find out more about the main differences between each variant of the Mazda 3 and hopefully you will get a clearer idea of which one would best suit you.
At the entry level is the G20 Pure, followed by the G20 Evolve, G20 Touring, G25 Evolve, G25 GT, and finally the top-specified G25 Astina.
Hatchback or Sedan?
The first thing to do is decide whether you want a hatchback or sedan. As both body types are priced the same, it all comes down to which style you prefer and if the extra boot space of the sedan is important to you.
In designing the Mazda 3 hatchback the goal was to create a sporty and more exciting car. A low roofline and wide stance delivers a strong presence and robust character.
In designing the Mazda 3 sedan the goal was to create a sleeker and more elegant car, with fluidity in the design creating an understated sophistication.
Exclusive to and standard on all hatchbacks is a rear spoiler, rear window wiper and an added colour choice in the newly developed Polymetal Grey Metallic (that changes depending on the light, accentuating beautiful lines of bodywork).
Motor Variants
There are two engine sizes available and it’s also worth noting they are used as part of the naming convention for Mazda 3 trim grades. G20 variants are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol, while G25 variants run on a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol ending.
Both engines are available in either a 6 speed manual or 6 speed auto transmission.
G20 Pure – with all the core features you need
The Mazda 3 G20 Pure is the entry level trim grade, but in this case entry level is by no means no-frills. This is still a great vehicle that’s beautiful as it is functional. Quality is abundant from top to bottom, with beautifully crafted detailing throughout the whole cabin.
Notable standard features include Mazda’s Active Driver Display on a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster, and the all-new Mazda Connect system displayed in stunning clarity on an 8.8-inch widescreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Satellite navigation also comes as standard.
The newly developed G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) offers unprecedented levels of confidence-inspiring controllability.
In the realm of safety, Mazda has introduced a newly developed knee airbag for the driver’s seat and some of the latest in driver assist technology, such as Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane-keep Assist System (LAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW)), and Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC).
Other standard features (that get upgraded at higher trim levels) include:
