If you’re in the market for a sporty, affordable and fun car, these two Japanese offerings should be at the top of your wish list. However, while both models may have similar characteristics, how do they stack up against each other?
The RF is one of the newest Mazda cars for sale and makes a good comparison to the Subaru BRZ in terms of price. However, the Mazda does have some great kit that is missing from the Subaru. The MX 5 features sat nav, rear cross traffic alerts, and blind spot monitoring.
Both models feature audio and Bluetooth phone streaming with USB connectivity. They also have 17 inch alloys, LED daytime running lights and LED headlights in common. However, the Mazda’s 7.0 inch touchscreen dwarfs the 6.2 inch offered on the BRZ.
Insight the Cabin
In theory, the Subaru seats four, but in real terms, you’d be lucky to accommodate anyone larger than a tot in the back. The Subaru also lacks the aesthetic qualities of the Mazda with a less than upmarket feel to the cabin.
The Mazda MX 5 instantly appears to have a nicer cabin, with body colour paint reaching around into the cabin. The MZD Connect is easy to use and offers excellent functionality.
The MX5 RF is only offered with an inline, 2.0 litre four cylinder petrol engine which offers 118 kW and 200 Nm. It requires premium unleaded and has a fuel use rate of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres. While the four cylinder 2.0 litre horizontally opposed engine in the BRZ does offer more power at 152 kW, it is also a lot more thirsty with a fuel consumption rate of 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres.
While you may prefer more power in a sporty model, it is worth bearing in mind that the BRZ is 162 kilograms heavier, so it is bound to need that additional power just to move its hefty 1242 kilograms.
This is where a comparison gets really tricky; both models do offer a ride that is genuinely fun. The MX5 does have a softer suspension set up that feels more pliant compared to the BRZ. If you’re heading into a tight corner, you’ll find the MX5’s nose will tuck and dip for an eager drive. The traction control feels compliant with ultra direct steering whether you’re on the track or hitting the open road.
