How to Remove Bird Poo and Sap From Your New Mazda CX 5
Table of Contents
It has happened to all of us, but there is nothing more disheartening than finding your beautiful shiny car covered in bird poo. This usually happens after you’ve parked under a shady tree on a warm day, but the sap and poop could cause costly damage to your paintwork. So, here are some tips to safely remove these problematic substances from your new CX 5.
The Danger to Your CX 5
Tree sap comes in many forms; there is the edible and tasty form such as maple syrup but also more toxic varieties. Sap is caused by bug secretions, and it is essentially water, minerals, sugars, tree nutrients, and hormones. Unfortunately, there can be almost immediate damage to your vehicle, depending on the type of tree and the species of bug feeding on it, so sap can become very acidic. While you can avoid parking under trees, you still need to know how to remove this sticky substance from your CX 5 as quickly as possible.
Act Fast
The key to removing sap from your Mazda CX 5 is to wash any sap as quickly as possible. The longer sap is left, the harder it will be and the more difficult it will be to remove. You should allow the car to sit in the sun for ten or fifteen minutes to allow both the paint and sap to heat up. This will make the sap more fluid and therefore easier to remove. Use hot water, car wash detergent, and a soft cloth to wash the sap off the paintwork. For tough sap, you may need bug and tar remover, which is a solvent based cleaner, but this should only be used in extreme cases.
If sap has been left too long, it can etch into your paint to create a circular watermark. This is not likely to be removed by washing, and you’ll need help from a professional.
Removing Bird Poo
Like sap, bird poo needs to be removed quickly as it contains uric acid that can etch into paintwork within minutes. The concentration of uric acid depends on what the bird has eaten, so while some can be left for days, others can cause damage after 30 seconds. So, the sooner you remove the poo, the better. If all you have available is water, splash on as much as you can. Even if you just place a damp cloth on the poop, it will keep it liquid and reduce the risk of etching. If your CX 5 is vulnerable to bird poo, because of trees in your neighbourhood, it is a good idea to carry a bottle of water and a soft cloth in your car.
